I used to think I had a business – but I actually had a website (or twenty). I bought a load of web URLs and put up some content and wondered why I wasn’t making a lot of money.

You see I hadn’t grasped the fundamental idea that a website isn’t a business.

A website is just a tool that can be integrated into your business system.

On my Japanese maple site I was lucky that I chose a very tight niche. A niche with competition that didn’t have much in the way of internet marketing know-how. I was fortunate that I used my “PAIN” of not being able to find the named trees I wanted at a good price at any garden center to uncover my business niche. And it turned out my pain was not unique. It was a “pain” or a “need” that others had.

So at first my simple web site sold seeds ok. I even moved from making one sale to several sales a week all on autopilot. But I still didn’t have a business. I just had an online store.

A store with no real way to connect with what people are searching for. So next I had to learn how to build a business.
