So you’ve decided to start your own business? Great, let’s get going.

Back when I first started I’d heard that one way to start your own business is to turn a hobby into a business.  That’s your first business idea – just one way you can think about what your own business idea could be.

Find a niche, preferably one you know something about and enjoy. Then become known as an expert in that topic.

So what do you like doing that you can start a business about?

I liked growing Japanese maple trees and had trouble (another PAIN) finding some particular trees I wanted to grow. I realized I couldn’t be the only one not being able to find these trees at a reasonable price (more people experiencing PAIN!). You see most garden centers only have 2 or 3 named varieties of Japanese maples. And prices are usually high – $150 and more.

Hence my business idea – providing a wide variety of Japanese maple trees marketed online and shipped mail order direct from the grower at a great price.

At the time it was Fall and growing season was over so that put an end to the idea of selling trees for a while. Then I had another idea, people look for seeds over winter and get ready for Spring planting.

After a little research and I found a source of seeds.  I put up a simple website and “back in the day” of the early internet people started finding my little Japanese maple tree seed site.

My first order came in overnight while I was asleep! Imagine the feeling waking up, checking your bank account and seeing you have more money there in your account than when you went to bed!

It feels GREAT!

Now – reality check (literally) – my first order was for a packet of seeds worth about $8.47. No big deal at one level.

But conceptually now all I have to do is replicate that event and do it over and over again 24/7/365. This is where MARKETING in general and INTERNET MARKETING skills in particular comes in.
