Without eyes on your site, you may as well not be in business. Last week Alex Jeffreys spent a whole week teaching his students website traffic techniques.
Now you can use Pay Per Click (PPC) to drive traffic FAST – but it can get very expensive very fast. Unless you know your conversion and are sure of your return on marketing spend, be careful with PPC.

Posted by: | CommentsAs you’ve learned if you read my earlier posts I started marketing online several years ago and had early success with a specialist niche marketing site on Japanese maple trees.
Today that site is ranked #1 in natural search on Google for at least one important long-tail keyword for this niche. Last time I looked I was in #1 and #2 positions for “Japanese maple seedlings”.

Now here’s the “hidden secret” to my success.
While I had early success with my simple seed page and I did make money. The reality is I didn’t have a real business.
Ultimately my success is because I took the step of getting myself a mentor with proven internet marketing success. Then I took action on what I learned from my mentor and “bingo” my business started growing and I began making more money than I had when I did it all myself.

Do You Really Have A Business?

I used to think I had a business – but I actually had a website (or twenty). I bought a load of web URLs and put up some content and wondered why I wasn’t making a lot of money.
You see I hadn’t grasped the fundamental idea that a website isn’t a business.
A website is just a tool that can be integrated into your business system.

On my Japanese maple site I was lucky that I chose a very tight niche. A niche with competition that didn’t have much in the way of internet marketing know-how. I was fortunate that I used my “PAIN” of not being able to find the named trees I wanted at a good price at any garden center to uncover my business niche. And it turned out my pain was not unique. It was a “pain” or a “need” that others had.
So at first my simple web site sold seeds ok. I even moved from making one sale to several sales a week all on autopilot. But I still didn’t have a business. I just had an online store.
A store with no real way to connect with what people are searching for. So next I had to learn how to build a business.
Choosing Your Business Idea

Back when I first started I’d heard that one way to start your own business is to turn a hobby into a business. That’s your first business idea – just one way you can think about what your own business idea could be.
Find a niche, preferably one you know something about and enjoy. Then become known as an expert in that topic.
So what do you like doing that you can start a business about?
I liked growing Japanese maple trees and had trouble (another PAIN) finding some particular trees I wanted to grow. I realized I couldn’t be the only one not being able to find these trees at a reasonable price (more people experiencing PAIN!). You see most garden centers only have 2 or 3 named varieties of Japanese maples. And prices are usually high – $150 and more.
Hence my business idea – providing a wide variety of Japanese maple trees marketed online and shipped mail order direct from the grower at a great price.
At the time it was Fall and growing season was over so that put an end to the idea of selling trees for a while. Then I had another idea, people look for seeds over winter and get ready for Spring planting.
After a little research and I found a source of seeds. I put up a simple website and “back in the day” of the early internet people started finding my little Japanese maple tree seed site.
My first order came in overnight while I was asleep! Imagine the feeling waking up, checking your bank account and seeing you have more money there in your account than when you went to bed!
It feels GREAT!

Now – reality check (literally) – my first order was for a packet of seeds worth about $8.47. No big deal at one level.
But conceptually now all I have to do is replicate that event and do it over and over again 24/7/365. This is where MARKETING in general and INTERNET MARKETING skills in particular comes in.
Getting started can be as easy as this. Plan and build your business using an automated business system. This where you go next on your new business journey .
It took me a lot of trial and error, thousands of dollars hard earned money invested in a long learning period, with many mistakes made before I began to progress and succeed step by step.

What “Made Me” Learn Internet Marketing?

Ouch!!! My pain – and the realization that something had to change.
My original pain came from being sick and tired of being sick and tired of being an employee. Working for someone else’s profit and earning a good wage, but literally trading my time, my very life just for money.
You know the deal, at first you just feel upset at your boss for not giving you ‘attaboys’ or recognizing your contributions. That’s a relatively minor pain. Then over time the pain grows and the realization dawns, you’re trading your heartbeats for dollars.
And you’re not being paid enough for the limited number of heartbeats you’re trading!
You see I was naive and eager to learn and progress in major corporations and I worked hard for years.

My first job after graduating was as a Food Scientist in the UK working on major brands like Ribena, Locozade and Quosh (Ex-pats and Brits will recognize these!). See pictures.
I took the job because I knew the company “Beecham’s Products” was known for its junior management training but the price you paid was a relatively low starting salary. To give you an idea how low, when I changed jobs after about 2 and a half years my pay jumped 50%
Then I moved to another major multinational company as “Quality Audit Manager”. To cut a long story short (covering a couple of decades) I did the usual thing you’re taught to do – climb the corporate ladder. I became “Development Engineering Manager and gradually it dawned on me…
…I could do my bosses job.
But still at each stage as I was promoted up and up – I still wasn’t satisfied.
Yes, I earned more money at each job move, I later became one of the comapny’s European R&D Directors and I did get to travel all over the world paid by the company…
But what did I see?
The airport and the road from the airport to the hotel followed by the road from the hotel to the company building…
…Then back again.
And all the time I’m away from my family.
PAIN, PAIN and more PAIN!
So now you get the picture – I’m not getting paid enough, I’m away from my family and although I’m working harder and harder, I’m still not even getting recognition for a job well done!
And I still have the PAIN!
At what point does the penny actually drop for you?At what point do you decide to do something about it?
Finally you realize – as I did – you’re not going to get what you want from being an employee.It’s tough to stop and tell yourself that you’ve spent your working life on this employee treadmill that’s not getting you what you want.
It’s tough to stop and get out of your comfort zone and decide to do something different.
But it’s even tougher if you let yourself get to the end of your life and you have to tell yourself…“I wish I’d tried to something to make the change in my life that can get me all I want – without the PAIN!
If I can teach you just two things in this post – TAKE ACTION and DON’T EVER QUIT no matter what your friends and family may say.

Why Learn Internet Marketing?

Why should you learn internet marketing? It’s a simple question but a vital one.
That’s what this blog is about – why I started to learn internet marketing and why I continue to learn and apply internet marketing to my business today.
There are 3 words in the sentence above that are key to YOUR SUCCESS that I’ll come back to time and again in future blog posts.
“…to my business…”
You see I didn’t learn internet marketing for the sake of it. I did and still do it to apply to my business. My highest hope is that my continuing story will inspire you to take action and learn internet marketing for YOUR business benefit.
In the next post I’ll explain exactly why I started and as you go through my blog you’ll discover my “secrets” to success.
